Hidden beneath the mountains of Kami City in Kochi Prefecture, Ryugado is one of Japan’s most celebrated limestone caves — and one of the most spectacular natural attractions you can visit on a shore excursion from the Kochi cruise port. Stretching for over one kilometer through the mountain, it is a place of dramatic rock formations, underground waterfalls, colorful lighting, and — for those who want something more exciting — a genuine adventure tour that takes you deep into areas most visitors miss.

About Ryugado Cave

Ryugado has been designated as both a National Natural Monument and a Historic Site by the Japanese government — a rare double designation that reflects just how significant this cave is, both geologically and historically. The cave has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and archaeological discoveries inside have included pottery and other artifacts from the Yayoi period, dating back over 2,000 years.

The cave is formed in limestone rock, shaped over hundreds of millions of years by underground water. As you walk through it, you pass through a series of chambers of different sizes, connected by narrow corridors and open halls. Stalactites hang from the ceilings. Stalagmites rise from the floors. Underground streams run through the deeper sections, and in places the sound of flowing water fills the entire space.

The standard walking course is well-maintained and lit throughout, making it accessible for most visitors. The path winds through the cave for about one kilometer and takes roughly 40 minutes to complete at a comfortable pace.

The Lighting: A Different World at Every Turn

One of the things that makes Ryugado particularly memorable for visitors is the cave lighting. Different sections are illuminated in different colors — blues, greens, and warm ambers — which transform the rock formations into something that looks almost otherworldly. A curtain of stalactites glowing in deep green, an underground waterfall bathed in electric blue — these are the kinds of images that stay with you.

💡 Tip: The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 17°C (63°F) throughout the year. Even on a hot summer day, the inside of the cave will feel cool — bring a light jacket if you tend to get cold easily.

The Adventure Tour: For Those Who Want More

For visitors who want to go beyond the standard walking course, Ryugado offers an optional adventure tour that takes you into the wilder, unlit parts of the cave. This is a genuinely different experience — you put on overalls and a helmet with a headlamp, and a guide leads you through sections of the cave that require climbing over rocks, crouching through low passages, and navigating by torchlight.

This adventure tour must be booked in advance, and it is recommended for people who are reasonably fit and comfortable in enclosed spaces. It is not suitable for visitors with mobility issues or claustrophobia. But for those who are up for it, it is one of the most memorable things you can do in Kochi.

On the Way: Tosa Forged Blade Shops

The road leading to Ryugado passes through an area known for Tosa Uchihamono — traditional forged blades made in Kochi Prefecture. This craft has a history of over 700 years, and the knives, scissors, and tools produced here are regarded as some of the finest in Japan. You will notice several blade shops along the route, each displaying racks of knives and other cutting tools, some still in their protective wrapping.

If you are interested in Japanese craftsmanship, stopping at one of these shops is a wonderful addition to the day. The shop staff are usually happy to show visitors the different types of blades — from kitchen knives designed for home cooks to heavy-duty tools used by craftsmen and farmers. Some shops also carry decorative items including replica samurai swords, making for a distinctive souvenir.

💡 Tip: Japanese kitchen knives make excellent souvenirs and gifts — they are well-priced, practical, and genuinely high quality. Most shops can provide them in packaging suitable for checked luggage on your return flight.
