How to Enjoy Cherry Blossoms in Japan: A Guide for Cruise Visitors in Kochi
If your cruise ship stops in Japan during spring, you have a real chance to see one of the most beautiful things this country offers — cherry blossoms. In Kochi, the blossom season starts earlier than most parts of Japan, which means even visitors arriving in Early March can catch the flowers at their best. This guide will tell you everything you need to know to enjoy the blossoms during your port day.

What Are Cherry Blossoms?
Cherry blossoms — called sakura in Japanese — are the flowers of cherry trees. They bloom for only about two weeks each spring, which makes them very special. In Japan, people have loved sakura for more than 1,000 years. The short blooming period reminds people that beautiful things do not last forever. This feeling has a name in Japanese: mono no aware.
Every year, Japanese TV and newspapers report the “sakura forecast” — predicting when the flowers will open in each city. People plan trips and parties around this forecast. It is a big event for the whole country.
What Is Hanami?
Hanami (花見) means “flower viewing.” It is the tradition of going outside to enjoy the blossoms with friends or family. Most people bring food and drinks, spread a blanket under a blooming tree, and spend the afternoon looking up at the flowers.
Parks across Japan fill up with people during hanami season. You will see groups of friends, families with children, and coworkers all sitting together under the trees. The atmosphere is relaxed and happy. Even rain does not stop people from going — as you can see in this photo from one of my tours.

This group came on a rainy day, but they still had a wonderful time. Standing under a beautiful weeping plum tree with petals all around you — a little rain actually makes the moment feel more memorable.
Japan Has More Than Just Cherry Blossoms
Many visitors are surprised to learn that Japan has many different types of spring-blooming trees — not only the famous cherry blossom. Each type has its own color, shape, and bloom time. In Kochi, you can see several varieties depending on when your ship arrives.
Ume — Japanese Plum (February to March)
Ume is the first spring blossom to appear. The flowers are smaller than cherry blossoms, and the fragrance is sweet and gentle — something cherry blossoms do not have. Weeping ume trees, with branches that hang down gracefully, are especially beautiful. If you visit Kochi in February, ume is what you will see first.

This small weeping tree in a Japanese-style garden shows how elegant these trees can look. The drooping branches and soft pink flowers make a beautiful contrast against the quiet gravel garden around it.
Kawazu Zakura — Early Cherry Blossom (February to March)
Kawazu zakura is an early-blooming type of cherry tree. The flowers are a deeper pink than the classic Somei Yoshino cherry, and they bloom several weeks earlier. The blooming period is also longer — sometimes three to four weeks. In Kochi’s countryside, kawazu zakura trees are a wonderful sight from late February onward.

These kawazu zakura trees stand in front of the dark green mountains of Kochi. The deep pink color against the forest background is one of my favorite things to show guests in early spring. It is not a famous tourist spot — just a beautiful corner of the countryside that most visitors never see.
Somei Yoshino — Classic Cherry Blossom (Late March to April)
This is the most famous cherry blossom in Japan. The flowers are pale pink — almost white — and when they bloom all at once, the entire tree looks like a soft pink cloud. Most sakura photos you see from Japan are Somei Yoshino. In Kochi, they usually peak in late March to early April.

These guests came at exactly the right time — full bloom. When you stand under a Somei Yoshino tree at peak bloom, petals drift down around you slowly and everything feels peaceful. It is one of those moments that stays with you long after the trip is over.
Momo — Peach Blossom (March)
Peach blossoms are a rich, deep pink — much darker and more vivid than cherry blossoms. The flowers grow close to the branches, giving the tree a very full, dense look. They bloom around March in Kochi, often overlapping with the early cherry season.

Wild Blossoms in the Countryside
On tours through Kochi’s rural roads, we sometimes find small wild-blooming trees that most people walk right past. These delicate white and pale pink flowers are easy to miss, but they are stunning up close. This is one of the small surprises I enjoy sharing with guests on private tours.

When Do the Blossoms Bloom in Kochi?
Kochi has a warm climate, so blossoms arrive earlier here than in Tokyo or Kyoto. This is great news for cruise visitors — you may be able to see beautiful flowers even in February.
- February: Ume (plum) blossoms begin; kawazu zakura starts to open
- Late February to mid-March: Kawazu zakura and weeping ume at peak bloom
- March: Peach blossoms appear; early cherry varieties continue
- Late March to early April: Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms at full bloom
- Mid-April: Petals begin to fall; some late varieties still visible
One important thing to know: bloom timing changes every year. A warm winter brings early flowers. A cold spring delays everything. I always check the latest conditions before each tour so I can take guests to the best spots on the actual day of their visit.
How to Enjoy Blossoms on a Short Port Day
If you only have a few hours in Kochi, here are some simple tips to make the most of blossom season:
- Go in the morning. The flowers are fresh, and popular spots are less crowded early in the day.
- Don’t worry about cloudy weather. Soft light on an overcast day makes blossom photos look beautiful — sometimes better than bright sunshine.
- Don’t wait for “perfect” conditions. If the flowers are open, go see them. Waiting a few days can mean missing the peak.
- Look for weeping trees. Weeping ume and weeping cherry trees have a very different look from regular trees — more graceful and poetic.
- Ask a local guide. Bloom timing is unpredictable. Someone who is out in the field every day will know exactly where to go.
