📍 Sukumo Cruise Port | 🗣 English | ⏱ 6.5 hours | 👥 Up to 6 people
Sukumo is one of Japan’s least-visited cruise ports. Most passengers wonder what to do here. The answer is simple: this is the gateway to one of the most dramatic and historically rich corners of all of Japan.
On this tour, we follow the story of John Manjiro, a teenage fisherman from a small village nearby who was shipwrecked in the Pacific, rescued by an American whaling ship, and eventually became the first Japanese person to live permanently in the United States. His story begins just one hour from Sukumo. It is one of the most remarkable stories in Japanese history, and almost no one outside Japan has heard it.
After the museum and his birthplace, we continue to the wild southern coast. Here, a small fishing harbor sits beside water so blue it looks tropical. A short walk away, a shrine called Ryugu, meaning Dragon Palace, stands right on the edge of the Pacific, with a bright red torii gate rising from the rocks above the ocean. It is one of the most beautiful places I know in all of Kochi.
Everything moves at your pace. I will pick you up at the Sukumo cruise terminal and bring you back with plenty of time before your ship departs.

Itinerary
Approximate times shown below. The schedule can be adjusted to suit your ship’s arrival and departure times.
I will meet you directly at the Sukumo cruise terminal. We travel in a comfortable Toyota Alphard with seating for up to six guests.
This museum tells the full story of Nakahama Manjiro, the teenage fisherman who survived a Pacific shipwreck, was rescued by an American whaling ship, and went on to become the first Japanese person to live in the United States. The exhibits are well organized and have strong English explanations throughout. Highlights include a model of the rescue ship, Manjiro’s handwritten English alphabet scroll, and a world map tracing all the voyages he made during his lifetime.
A short drive from the museum brings us to the restored thatched farmhouse where Manjiro was born in 1827. Standing inside this simple coastal home, it is hard to imagine that this is where one of Japan’s most extraordinary lives began. The contrast between his humble origins and his remarkable story is something that stays with you.
We stop for lunch at a local restaurant in Tosashimizu City. This area is one of Japan’s top fishing ports for katsuo, the skipjack tuna used to make katsuo no tataki. This is a great opportunity to try one of Kochi’s most famous dishes in the area where it is caught. Lunch is not included in the tour price.
This quiet, working harbor is not a famous tourist spot, but it is one of the most beautiful places on this coast. The water here is a remarkable shade of blue, clear and bright in a way that feels almost tropical. Near the harbor stands a very old tree with a massive trunk, considered sacred by local people. Rocky cliffs drop into the sea nearby, and you can see sea caves where the turquoise water glows under the rock. It is the kind of place that most visitors to Japan never see.
Ryugu Shrine sits right on the rocky Pacific coastline, overlooking the open ocean. The name means Dragon Palace, from the ancient Japanese legend of the sea god’s underwater palace. A stone torii gate leads through a quiet forest path to the shrine, and near the water’s edge, a bright red torii gate stands directly among the rocks. On a sunny day, the view through the torii with the sparkling Pacific behind it is one of the best photographs you can take in Kochi. The small shrine building itself, entirely red against the grey rocks and green mountains, is simple and very beautiful.
We head back to the Sukumo cruise terminal, arriving at approximately 15:15. I will ensure you are back well before your ship’s all-aboard time.
