Why I Became a Guide in Kochi

My name is Hiroshi M, a licensed local guide based in Kochi, Japan.
I was born and raised in Kochi, a coastal region on the Pacific side of Shikoku Island.

When I was younger, I believed the world existed somewhere far away from here.
I moved to Tokyo and lived in Shibuya, one of the busiest districts in Japan.

Later, I lived in the United States, spending time in New York and Philadelphia.
Living in big cities was exciting and life-changing.

I met people from many cultures and saw how travelers experience Japan from the outside.
But something unexpected happened.
The more I saw the world, the more I missed Kochi.
Not only its history, but its culture, its people, and the peaceful rhythm of life here.
That is why I came back.
I returned because I love the way time flows in Kochi.

The kindness of the people.
The strong connection to nature.
The feeling that life can be simple and meaningful.

Most visitors experience Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.

They see the famous highlights, but rarely the everyday Japan.
I became a guide because I wanted to share the Japan that exists beyond the guidebooks.

A slower, more personal, and more authentic Japan.
Kochi is the perfect place for that experience.

My Love for History and Storytelling

Kochi played a quiet but powerful role in shaping modern Japan.
This is the hometown of Sakamoto Ryoma, one of the key figures who helped end the samurai era and open Japan to the world.

It is also deeply connected to the Shikoku Pilgrimage, Buddhism, and centuries of local traditions.
History here is not something locked inside museums.

It lives in daily life, in temples, markets, streets, and food culture.
I have always loved history, not as dates and facts, but as human stories.
Why did people make difficult choices?
How did they live?
What did they believe?

When travelers understand the stories behind the places they visit, travel becomes much more meaningful.

That is the type of experience I try to create on every tour.

My Philosophy as a Guide

I believe the best tours feel like spending the day with a local friend.
Not a lecture.
Not a rushed checklist.
A relaxed, flexible, and personal experience.

Some guests want deep history.
Some want local food and culture.
Some simply want to enjoy scenery and atmosphere.

Every tour is different because every traveler is different.

At the end of the day, my goal is simple:

I want Kochi to become one of the most memorable parts of your trip to Japan.

Licensed Guide & Comfortable Private Transport

I am a Kochi Local Licensed Guide and offer private tours using a comfortable premium minivan (Toyota Alphard).
This allows us to explore efficiently and comfortably, especially for cruise ship guests or travelers with limited time.
Private transport makes it possible to reach places that are difficult to access by public transportation while keeping the schedule flexible and stress-free.

Photography During the Tour

Photography is one of my hobbies, and I always take photos throughout the tour.
After the tour, I share the photo album with guests as a gift.
Many travelers tell me these photos become some of their favorite memories from Japan.

The Birth of Kochi Insider

While guiding more international visitors, I noticed something surprising.
Many guests told me:

“I wish we had known about Kochi earlier.”

That is why I created Kochi Insider.
It started as a way to share local knowledge, hidden spots, and real travel tips.

Today, it has grown into a project that connects tours, travel content, and local experiences.

My mission is simple:

Help travelers discover parts of Japan that are not in typical guidebooks.

VILLA URARA THE COAST

In addition to guiding, I also operate a private oceanfront villa called VILLA URARA THE COAST.
This experience deepened my understanding of international travelers and hospitality.
Running a villa taught me how important comfort, privacy, and meaningful experiences are when visiting Japan.
Many guests who stay at the villa also join my tours, and this connection between accommodation and guiding allows me to create more personal and memorable experiences.

Both guiding and hosting share the same goal:

Helping visitors feel truly welcome in Kochi.

More Than Just a Tour

Sharing local food with guest

A tour is not just about visiting places.

It is about the moments you remember years later.
Conversations in the car.
A meal shared at a local market.
A quiet temple in the mountains.
The ocean at sunset.

These moments often become the highlights of a trip.
