Cape Ashizuri (足摺岬) is one of the most beautiful places on the entire Pacific coastline of Japan. Located in Tosashimizu City, about 120 kilometers from Kochi, this dramatic cape offers stunning ocean views, ancient shrines, and a feeling of being at the very edge of Japan. If you are visiting Kochi, a day trip to Cape Ashizuri is truly worth the journey.

On the way to the cape, you will pass Oki Beach (大岐の浜). This long, curved beach stretches along the coast with white sand and clear blue water. It is a popular surf spot, but even if you are not a surfer, it is worth stopping to enjoy the view. The beach is surrounded by green mountains, and on a sunny day the contrast of colors is simply beautiful.

Tip: Oki Beach is one of the cleanest and most natural beaches in Kochi. There are no big resort hotels or crowds here — just the ocean, the sand, and the mountains.

Matsuo Fishing Harbor: A Sacred Tree and Beautiful Blue Water

Before reaching the cape, a stop at Matsuo Fishing Harbor (松尾漁港) is a real highlight. This small, quiet harbor is not a famous tourist spot, but it has something special. The water here is an incredible shade of blue — clear and bright, the kind of color you might expect in a tropical country. It is hard to believe this is a working fishing port in Japan.

Near the harbor, there is also a remarkable old tree with a massive trunk and thick, twisted roots. Trees like this are often considered sacred in Japan — they are called goshinboku (御神木), meaning “divine tree.” This one is incredibly large and old. Standing next to it, you can feel a quiet sense of history and nature all around you.

The coastline around the harbor is also dramatic. Rocky cliffs drop straight into the sea, and you can see sea caves where the turquoise water glows under the rock. It is the kind of scenery that makes you want to stop and just look for a while.

Tip: Matsuo Harbor is a place that most tourists never visit. That is exactly what makes it special. The water color here is best on a sunny morning.

Ryugu Shrine: A Shrine at the Edge of the Pacific

One of the most memorable stops near Cape Ashizuri is Ryugu Shrine (龍宮神社). This small but powerful shrine sits right on the rocky coast, overlooking the open Pacific. The name “Ryugu” means “Dragon Palace” — in Japanese mythology, this was the underwater palace of the sea god. It is easy to understand why the local people chose this spot to build a shrine.

You enter the shrine through an old stone torii gate. The path leads through a quiet forest, where the trees arch over the walkway like a natural tunnel. It feels calm and a little mysterious, even in the middle of the day.

Tip: The path through the forest can be a little uneven. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Near the shrine, there is a bright red torii gate standing right among the rocks at the edge of the ocean. The red color stands out strongly against the grey rocks and the deep blue of the Pacific. On a sunny day, the view through the torii gate — with the sparkling ocean behind it — is one of the best photo opportunities in all of Kochi.

There is also a small, fully red shrine building — red torii gate, red walls, red roof — sitting at the base of the rocky cliffs with mountains behind it. Simple, but very beautiful.

The Rocky Coastline of Cape Ashizuri

Cape Ashizuri itself is famous for its dramatic rock formations. The rocks here have a unique layered texture — they look almost like the pages of a very old book, stacked and tilted by millions of years of geological movement. Walking along the cliff paths, you can look down and see waves crashing into narrow rock channels far below.

The cape also has a lighthouse — Ashizuri Lighthouse — one of the oldest Western-style lighthouses in Japan. From the cliff path below, you can see it standing high on the rocks above the coastline.

Tip: The cliff paths are open and exposed. On a windy day the gusts can be strong, so please be careful near the edges.

Climbing to the Torii at the Top

One of the most dramatic features of the cape is a large rocky peak that rises directly from the ocean. Stone steps have been carved into the rock, leading all the way up to a small red torii gate and a tiny shrine at the very top. Looking at it from below, the path looks steep — and it is. But for those who enjoy a short climb, the view from the top is incredible.

Tip: The climb to the top requires good balance and some effort. It is completely optional — the view from the base path is wonderful too.
