Chikurinji Temple: Where Shinto Meets Buddhism

Our first stop was Chikurinji Temple, one of Kochi’s most sacred sites. Here, visitors experience something unique to Japanese culture: Shinbutsu-shugo, the harmonious blend of Shinto and Buddhism. Within the temple grounds, a Shinto shrine stands alongside Buddhist structures, reflecting centuries of religious coexistence.

The peaceful atmosphere and beautiful architecture make Chikurinji an ideal place to begin understanding Japanese spirituality and tradition.

Traditional Purification Rituals

Before entering sacred spaces, we practiced the traditional hand-washing ritual at the temizuya (water pavilion). This purification custom has been performed by Japanese people for centuries before approaching temples and shrines.

Kochi Castle: A Glimpse into Feudal Japan

Standing before Kochi Castle’s impressive architecture, we explored one of Japan’s twelve original castles that survived wars and natural disasters. The vivid vermillion color and traditional design transport visitors back to the Edo period.

Samurai Residences: Understanding Social Structure

Before visiting Kochi Castle, we explored the preserved samurai residences. Walking through these historic homes helped our guests understand the social hierarchy and daily life of samurai families during the feudal era.

Hirome Market: Kochi’s Living Food Culture

We concluded our tour at Hirome Market, the beating heart of Kochi’s food scene. This lively indoor market brings together locals and visitors in a casual, communal dining atmosphere.
