Kochi’s Yosakoi Festival: A Cruise Shore Excursion Like No Other

August 9-12 – These four days transform Kochi into one of Japan’s most vibrant celebrations. I finally got to guide a Yosakoi Festival tour, something I’ve dreamed of doing for years, and it was everything I hoped for and more.

The Story Behind Yosakoi

The Yosakoi Festival began in 1954 to energize the local community and bring happiness to the people of Kochi. What started as a modest celebration has grown into one of Japan’s most spectacular summer festivals, attracting teams from across the country.

Where Love and Legend Began: Chikurinji Temple

Our tour began at Chikurinji Temple, the place where the famous Yosakoi love story started. This is where a monk and a young girl first met – a meeting that would become legendary in Kochi’s history.

The Forbidden Love Story: Harimayabashi Bridge

At Harimayabashi Bridge, we learned about the climax of the story – where the monk’s secret love was discovered. In those days, it was strictly forbidden for monks to fall in love, making this tale both romantic and tragic.

We visited Kochi Castle, where history meets the energy of the festival. The castle provides a stunning backdrop to the modern celebration happening in the streets below.

The Main Event: Yosakoi Parade 🔥

Then came the moment we’d been waiting for – the main parade. Powerful music, colorful floats, and hundreds of dancers filled the streets with incredible energy. The passion and dedication of each team is absolutely breathtaking.

A Personal Connection

Having been part of Yosakoi myself for nearly 10 years – leading a team, winning prizes, and experiencing both the challenges and joy that come with this festival – sharing it with visitors from overseas felt like a true honor. Yosakoi isn’t just a performance; it’s a way of life for many in Kochi, and it’s the biggest event of our year.
