Niyodo Blue Shore Excursion from Kochi: A Day Along Japan’s Clearest River
If you are looking for a shore excursion that takes you away from the city and into nature, the Niyodo Blue tour is one of the best choices in Kochi. The Niyodo River is known as Japan’s clearest river, and on a sunny day, the color of the water is something you will not forget. This tour takes you along the river, through quiet countryside, and finishes with a local lunch and a surprise stop at a small shrine surrounded by cherry blossoms.

First Stop: Nagoya Chinkabashi Bridge
The first stop on the tour is the Nagoya Chinkabashi, a traditional low-water bridge over the Niyodo River. Unlike modern bridges, this one sits very close to the surface of the water. There are no guardrails, so you can really feel the river around you. It is a short walk across, but the view of the clear green water on both sides is worth it. On this day, the weather was perfect and the river looked beautiful in the morning light.

The Heart of the Tour: Yasui Valley and the Niyodo Blue
The main destination of the tour is Yasui Valley, deep in the mountains of Kochi. This is where you can see the famous “Niyodo Blue” at its best. The water is so clear that you can see the riverbed far below the surface. The color changes from light turquoise to deep emerald depending on the depth, and on a clear day like this one, it looks almost unreal.
We walked along the riverside path, stopped at viewpoints, and took our time enjoying the scenery. The fresh air and the sound of the water rushing through the rocks made it feel very different from a typical city sightseeing tour. For a group of retired farmers from Australia who love the outdoors, this was exactly the kind of experience they were looking for.

In 2025, the Niyodo River was ranked number one in water quality in all of Japan. When you see the water in person, it is easy to understand why. The cafe near the valley also serves drinking water straight from the river source — guests from Australia were very surprised by how good it tasted. The local ice cream made with the same water was a big hit too.

Cherry Blossoms Along the River
Early April is one of the best times to visit the Niyodo area. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom on this day, and the combination of white sakura, pink peach blossoms, and the bright blue water made the scenery even more impressive. We also passed a riverside park where local families were having picnics under the cherry trees — a very typical and relaxed Japanese spring scene.

Lunch at Hareta in Tosa City
For lunch, we stopped at Hareta, a popular restaurant in Tosa City. This is a great place to try local Kochi food in a relaxed setting. On this day, the group tried katsu-don (pork cutlet rice bowl) and shogayaki-don (ginger pork rice bowl). Both dishes are very popular in Japan and are a good introduction to everyday Japanese home-style cooking. Everyone enjoyed the meal, and the portions were generous.

Shopping at the Local Market
After lunch, we stopped at a local food market in Tosa City. This kind of market is where local people shop for fresh vegetables, Kochi specialties, and regional snacks. It is a very different experience from a tourist shop, and guests often enjoy browsing the products and picking up something to take back to the ship. On this day, one guest found a sweet local treat at the counter and decided to try it — a small but fun moment.

A Final Surprise: Cherry Blossoms at a Local Shrine
The last stop of the day was a small Shinto shrine in Usa, Tosa City — my hometown. This is not a famous tourist spot, but the cherry blossom trees lining the approach to the shrine were in perfect bloom. The stone torii gate framed by white sakura made for a beautiful scene, and it felt very quiet and peaceful compared to the more popular spots.

It was a nice way to end the day — a quiet local shrine, full bloom sakura, and a clear blue sky. The group said it was one of their favorite moments of the whole tour.
Perfect for Cruise Ship Passengers
This tour is designed with cruise passengers in mind. I will pick you up directly from the Kochi cruise terminal and take you to each location throughout the day, returning you to the port with plenty of time before departure. The pace is relaxed and can be adjusted to suit your group.
The Niyodo Blue area is about one hour from the port by car. It is not easy to reach on your own, so having a private guide makes the experience much smoother. I speak English and can explain everything along the way.
This tour is a good fit if you:
- Prefer nature over city sightseeing
- Want to see something off the usual tourist path
- Are travelling as a small group or couple
- Want a relaxed pace with no rushing
