Kochi Cruise Port: Frequently Asked Questions from Cruise Passengers
Every week, cruise passengers ask me the same questions before they arrive in Kochi. I have been guiding groups from the Kochi cruise terminal for years, and I know exactly what people want to know. This page answers the most common questions as clearly as I can.

Where is Kochi cruise port located?
Kochi cruise ships dock at Kochi New Port (高知新港), located on the coast south of the city center, about a 20 minute drive away. There is a small passenger facility with a waiting area near the dock.
How far is the cruise terminal from the city center?
The Kochi cruise terminal is about a 20 to 25 minute drive from Kochi Castle and the city center. By taxi, the journey takes around 25 minutes. On cruise days a shuttle bus usually runs between the terminal and the city center, and taxis are also available. Many passengers arrange a private guide for the day.
Are taxis available at Kochi cruise port?
Taxis are usually available at the terminal when cruise ships are in port, but supply can be limited when multiple ships dock on the same day. To be sure of your connection, arrange private transport in advance.
How much time do cruise ships spend in Kochi?
Most cruise itineraries allow between 6 and 9 hours in Kochi port. Ships commonly arrive between 7am and 9am and depart between 5pm and 7pm. Always note your all-aboard time and plan to be back at the ship at least 30 minutes early.
What are the top things to do in Kochi from a cruise ship?
- Kochi Castle — one of only twelve castles in Japan that keep their original Edo period wooden keep (rebuilt in 1749 after a fire)
- Chikurinji Temple — a 1,300-year-old temple with a five-story pagoda
- Katsurahama Beach — famous curved beach on the Pacific coast with a statue of Sakamoto Ryoma
- Hirome Market — the best place to eat katsuo no tataki, Kochi’s most famous dish
- Makino Botanical Garden — beautiful hillside garden dedicated to Japan’s most celebrated botanist
- Niyodo River — Japan’s clearest river, famous for extraordinary turquoise water (best for longer port calls)

What is katsuo no tataki and where can I try it in Kochi?
Katsuo no tataki is Kochi’s signature dish. It is bonito fish seared over a fire of burning straw, then sliced thin and served with ponzu sauce, garlic, and ginger. The outside is lightly charred and smoky, while the inside remains almost raw. The best place for cruise passengers to try it is Hirome Market, a covered indoor market in the center of the city.

Is Kochi easy to explore independently from the cruise ship?
The cruise terminal is too far from the city center to walk, about a 25 minute drive, so you need a shuttle bus or taxi to reach the city. Once you are downtown the central streets and Hirome Market are easy to walk, but the main sights are spread across the city and coast, and public buses between them run infrequently. For anything beyond one or two sights, a taxi or private guide is the easier option for cruise passengers with limited time.
What language do people speak in Kochi?
Japanese is the only language spoken in most of Kochi. English is not widely used outside of hotels and major tourist attractions. Signs at the main tourist sights have English translations.
What is the weather like in Kochi?
Kochi has a warm, humid climate and receives more rainfall than almost anywhere else in Japan. Summers are hot and wet. Spring and autumn are pleasant with mild temperatures. Bring a small umbrella or rain jacket regardless of the season.
Will I get back to the ship on time with a private guide?
This is the most common worry, and I take it seriously. You share your all aboard time when you contact me, and I plan the whole day around it with extra buffer time for the return to the cruise terminal. In normal conditions my guests get back with plenty of time to spare. I cannot promise against things that are outside anyone’s control, such as sudden traffic, an accident, or bad weather, but I always plan with a safety margin so you are not rushing at the end of the day.
What currency is used in Kochi?
Japan uses the Japanese yen (JPY). Many smaller restaurants and market stalls are cash only. ATMs at convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart) accept foreign cards and are easy to find in the city center.
Is Kochi worth visiting from a cruise ship?
Yes, strongly. Kochi surprises a lot of cruise passengers who arrive without high expectations. Unlike some Japanese cruise ports that can feel crowded with tourists, Kochi is genuinely local. The food is excellent, the sights are interesting, and the people are unusually welcoming. Almost every guest I take through the city says they wish they had more time here.
