When your cruise ship arrives at Kochi cruise port, most passengers head to the castle or the market in the city. But there is another choice, one that very few cruise ship passengers know about. Deep in the mountains, about 90 minutes from the Kochi cruise terminal, lies the Iya Valley. It is known as one of Japan’s Three Great Hidden Regions, and its most famous sight is a bridge made entirely of woven mountain vines. If you are looking for a shore excursion that feels like a real adventure into old Japan, this is the one.

What Is the Iya Vine Bridge

The Iya Vine Bridge, called Kazurabashi in Japanese, is a suspension bridge woven from wild mountain vines. It is about 45 meters long and hangs about 14 meters above the clear Iya River. People have crossed bridges like this here for hundreds of years. One old story says the Heike samurai clan built vine bridges on purpose, so they could cut them down quickly if enemies came into the valley.

Today the bridge is a nationally designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property. It is rebuilt with fresh vines about every three years, so it is strong and well maintained. Even so, when you take your first step and see the river through the gaps under your feet, your heart will beat a little faster. That feeling is exactly why people come here.

Crossing the Bridge

Crossing takes only a few minutes, but it is a moment you will not forget. The vines creak softly, the river shines below, and the green mountains rise all around you. You can cross slowly at your own pace, and there is no need to hurry. Right next to the bridge there is a small waterfall called Biwa Falls, which makes a perfect photo spot after your crossing.

A small tip: hold the side vines with both hands and take your time. The wooden slats have spaces between them, so shoes with a flat sole are much easier than sandals or heels. If you have a strong fear of heights, please tell me in advance. You can also enjoy the view of the bridge from the riverside without crossing it.

Oboke Gorge Sightseeing Boat

After the bridge, we ride a relaxing sightseeing boat through Oboke Gorge. This deep canyon was carved by the Yoshino River over millions of years. From the boat you can see white rock walls rising high above the deep green water. The boatman shares stories about the gorge, and the slow ride is a nice change of pace after the excitement of the vine bridge.

For cruise ship passengers this part is often a surprise favorite. You spend your trip on a huge ship on the ocean, and now you are on a small wooden boat on a quiet mountain river. The two could not feel more different.

Local Mountain Lunch

Lunch in the Iya Valley is simple, warm, and delicious. Local dishes include Iya soba noodles, grilled river fish, and miso dengaku, which is grilled tofu and konjac with sweet miso paste. The soba here is famous because the cool mountain climate is perfect for growing buckwheat. I always check your tastes and any food allergies in advance, and choose the best place for your group. Lunch usually costs about 1,000 to 1,500 yen per person, paid at the restaurant.

The Heike Residence

Our last stop is the Heike Residence, a historic thatched roof house connected to the Heike samurai clan. After losing a great war in the 12th century, some Heike families are said to have escaped deep into these mountains and lived here in secret. Standing in the quiet garden of this old house, surrounded by mountains, you can easily imagine why they chose this hidden valley. It is a calm and peaceful way to end the visit before we drive back to your ship.

Why This Tour Is Special for Cruise Guests

The Iya Valley is not on most standard cruise excursion lists. Public transportation to the valley is very limited, and the mountain roads are narrow and winding. This is why most cruise ship passengers never see it, even though it is one of the most loved hidden places in all of Japan. A private tour from the cruise port makes it easy. A Few Useful Tips

Please wear comfortable walking shoes, because there are some uneven steps around the bridge. In spring and autumn the valley can feel cool, so a light jacket is a good idea. Entrance fees are paid at each spot in cash, about 550 yen for the vine bridge, 1,500 yen for the boat, and 500 yen for the Heike Residence per adult. One more note: the bridge is rebuilt with fresh vines about every three years, and the next rebuild is planned for around January to February 2027, when the bridge will be closed for a short time. From December to February, snow can also make the mountain roads difficult, so for winter dates please contact me first.
