📍 Kochi 🗣 English ⏱ 6.5 hours 👥 Up to 6 people

Deep in the mountains on the border of Kochi and Tokushima lies the Iya Valley, known as one of Japan’s Three Great Hidden Regions (Nihon Sandai Hikyo). On this tour I take you from Kochi to the famous Iya Vine Bridge (Kazurabashi), a bridge woven from wild mountain vines that people have crossed for hundreds of years. We also ride a sightseeing boat through the dramatic Oboke Gorge, enjoy a local mountain lunch, and visit a historic thatched roof house connected to the Heike samurai clan.

The Iya Valley has become one of the most popular spots in Shikoku in recent years, loved by travelers looking for the real, hidden Japan. It is still not easy to reach on your own, so a cruise stop in Kochi is a perfect chance to visit. This is a private tour, so it is just you and your group throughout the day.

This itinerary can be customized to meet your needs and preferences. Send me a message with your requests!

08:00 AM
Meeting Point

I meet you at Kochi New Port (Cruise Ship Terminal), Kochi Ryoma Airport, JR Kochi Station, or any hotel in Kochi city, with door-to-door service in a comfortable Toyota Alphard. Then we start our drive into the mountains.

09:30 AM
Iya Vine Bridge (Kazurabashi)

We cross the famous vine bridge, about 45 meters long and 14 meters above the clear Iya River. It is rebuilt about every 3 years with fresh mountain vines, and it is a nationally designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property. A small waterfall is right next to the bridge. (About 30 minutes)

10:15 AM
Oboke Gorge Sightseeing Boat

We ride a relaxing sightseeing boat through Oboke Gorge, a canyon carved by the Yoshino River over millions of years. The white rock walls and deep green water are stunning. (About 1 hour)

11:30 AM
Local Lunch in the Iya Valley

We enjoy local mountain dishes such as Iya soba, grilled river fish, and miso dengaku. This menu is one example. I check your tastes and any food allergies in advance and choose the best place for your group. (About 45 minutes)

12:30 PM
Heike Residence (Heike Yashiki)

We visit a historic thatched roof house linked to the Heike clan, who are said to have escaped deep into these mountains in the 12th century. A quiet and peaceful place to end the visit. (About 30 minutes)

02:00 PM
Ending Point

Kochi New Port, Airport, Kochi Station, or any hotel in Kochi city. For cruise guests, I always plan the timing around your ship’s all aboard time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is the Iya Valley from Kochi?

The Iya Valley is about a 90 minute drive from Kochi city, through beautiful mountain and river scenery. Public transportation to this area is very limited, so a private tour makes it much easier to visit.

Is the vine bridge safe to cross?

Yes. The bridge is checked and maintained, and it is rebuilt with fresh vines about every 3 years. You can see the river through the gaps in the slats, which is exciting, but you can cross slowly at your own pace. The next rebuild is planned for around January to February 2027, and the bridge is closed during that work.

Is this tour good for cruise ship passengers?

Yes. This tour is planned with cruise passengers in mind. The Iya Valley is not on most standard cruise itineraries, so it is one of the most unique shore excursions from Kochi. I pick you up at the cruise terminal and always plan for an on-time return to your ship.

Can elderly guests or children join?

Yes. There is some walking and a few uneven steps, but the pace is relaxed and I adjust it to your group. Please let me know your needs in advance.

What is the best season to visit?

Late spring to autumn is wonderful, with fresh green in early summer and colorful leaves in autumn. From December to February, snow and icy roads can make the tour difficult to operate, so please contact me first for winter dates.

Can we try rafting or the riverside sauna?

Yes, in the warm season. Because the tour time is limited, we swap one of the stops instead of adding more. For example, we can skip the sightseeing boat and enjoy the riverside sauna for about 1 hour. Please tell me in advance so I can make a reservation.

Is this a private tour?

Yes, completely private. It is just you and your group. The price is per group (up to 6 people), which makes it great value for families and small groups.
