Historic Town, Bold Art and Kabuki Theater with Licensed Local Guide & Premium Minivan

Most visitors to Kochi head straight for the castle and the market — and those are wonderful. But this tour takes you somewhere different: east of the city, into a part of Kochi that feels genuinely untouched by tourism.
We’ll start in Aki City, where an entire samurai neighborhood has survived almost intact. Quiet stone-paved lanes, white-plastered walls, wooden gates — it’s the kind of place where you half expect a samurai to turn the corner. From there, we visit the birthplace of Yataro Iwasaki, the man who founded what became the Mitsubishi Group, born in a small thatched farmhouse in rural Kochi. The gap between that humble beginning and what he built is remarkable.
The highlight for many guests is Ekingura — a small museum dedicated to Ekin, a 19th-century local painter whose work was so vivid and raw that it was banned during his lifetime. His theatrical paintings are unlike anything else in Japan. If the schedule allows, we’ll also step inside Bentenza, a beautifully preserved kabuki theater next door, where you can walk the stage yourself.
This tour suits anyone who wants to go beyond the standard highlights and see a side of Kochi that even many Japanese people haven’t experienced.
Itinerary (Approximate times provided as an example)
This itinerary can be customized to meet your needs and preferences. Send me a message with your requests!
Kochi New Port, Airport, Kochi Station, or Any Hotel in Kochi City
I offer a convenient door-to-door meet-up service using a luxury Toyota Alphard. I can meet you at any of the following locations: Kochi New Port (Cruise Ship Terminal), Kochi Ryoma Airport (KCZ), JR Kochi Train Station, or any hotel or accommodation within Kochi City. Please inform me of your preferred meet-up location and time in advance. I will be there to welcome you and start our Kochi adventure in comfort.
Step into the past as you walk through the peaceful Doi Kachu district in Aki City — one of the best-preserved samurai neighborhoods in Kochi. Lined with white-plastered walls, black wooden gates, and stone-paved streets, this area once housed middle-ranking samurai of the Tosa domain.
Some of the homes, such as the former Hamada family residence, are open to the public and offer a glimpse into daily life during the Edo period. Unlike popular tourist spots, Doi Kachu remains quiet and authentic, making it a perfect place to experience the atmosphere of old Japan.
Visit the humble thatched-roof home where Yataro Iwasaki, the founder of the Mitsubishi Group, was born in 1835. Located in Aki City, this preserved residence offers a look into his early life and the modest beginnings from which he rose to become one of Japan’s most influential industrialists.
Step into the dramatic world of Ekin, a local painter from the late Edo period known for his vivid and sometimes shocking theatrical artworks. Whether you’re an art lover or a cultural explorer, Ekingura offers a truly unique glimpse into Kochi’s creative past.
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant between stops. Recommendations include fresh bonito tataki, seasonal seafood, or countryside-style teishoku meals. If you have any dietary restrictions or preferences, please let me know in advance — I will do my best to find a suitable place for you.
If the schedule allows, we may be able to visit Bentenza, a beautiful kabuki theater located right next to the Ekingura museum in Akaoka. (No live performance. This is a cultural visit focused on the building’s unique architecture and history — guests are welcome to walk the stage.)
If the theater is closed, we will instead visit Katsurahama Beach, one of Kochi’s most scenic spots, where you can enjoy panoramic ocean views and the famous statue of Sakamoto Ryoma.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this tour suitable for cruise ship passengers?
Yes. The destinations on this tour — Aki City, Ekingura, and Bentenza — are in eastern Kochi, about 40–50 minutes from Kochi New Port by car. I’ll pick you up directly at the cruise terminal and plan the day around your ship’s departure time so you’re back with plenty of time to spare.
Who was Ekin, and why is his art considered unusual?
Ekin (1812–1876) was a self-taught painter from Akaoka who created large, intensely dramatic paintings for use in kabuki festival floats. His style was bold, emotional, and sometimes grotesque by the standards of the time — which led authorities to ban public display of his work during his lifetime. Today he’s celebrated as one of Kochi’s most original artistic voices. Seeing his paintings in person at Ekingura is a genuinely striking experience.
Can we see a kabuki performance at Bentenza?
Bentenza does not host regular performances open to casual visitors. Our visit is a cultural tour of the theater building itself — you can walk through the space, step onto the stage, and learn about the history of kabuki in this region. It’s a rare chance to experience the atmosphere of a working traditional theater without a ticketed performance.
What is the connection between Kochi and Mitsubishi?
Yataro Iwasaki, who founded what became the Mitsubishi Group, was born in 1835 in what is now Aki City, Kochi. He grew up in modest circumstances in rural Tosa (the old name for Kochi) before eventually building one of Japan’s most powerful business empires. Visiting his birthplace — a simple thatched farmhouse — makes the scale of his achievement all the more remarkable.
How is this tour different from the Kochi Highlights Tour?
The Kochi Highlights Tour focuses on the city center — Kochi Castle, Hirome Market, Chikurinji Temple. This tour heads east into a quieter, less-visited part of the prefecture. The two tours don’t overlap, so guests who have more than one day in Kochi often choose to do both. If you’re only in port for one day and want to see the castle, the Highlights Tour is the better choice. If you prefer history, art, and places off the standard tourist path, this one is ideal.
What happens if it rains?
The tour runs rain or shine. Most of the stops on this tour — Ekingura, Bentenza, the samurai residences — are either indoors or covered, so light rain doesn’t significantly affect the experience. I carry umbrellas in the vehicle for guests to use. If severe weather is forecast, I’ll contact you in advance to discuss options.
Is this a private tour?
Yes, completely private. It’s just you and your group — no strangers sharing the vehicle or the guide. The price is per group (up to 6 people), which makes it good value for families or small groups traveling together.
How do I book this tour?
Click the “Send a Message” button on this page to contact me directly. Let me know your preferred date, group size, and any special requests. I typically respond within 12 hours. No payment is required upfront — we’ll confirm all the details before anything is finalized.
