Where Your Ship Docks: Kochi New Port

Cruise ships in Kochi dock at Kochi New Port, called “Kochi Shinko” in Japanese. It is a modern port on the coast, south of the city center. There is a clean cruise terminal building at the pier where immigration and customs checks are done when needed. The terminal usually has free Wi-Fi, restrooms, and a tourist information desk on cruise days, with local staff and volunteers who want to help you.

Here is the important point. Kochi New Port is a working port, not a downtown pier. You cannot simply walk out of the gate into a shopping street. The city center is about 20 to 30 minutes away by car. So your first decision of the day is how to get into town.

The Shuttle Bus

On most cruise days, a shuttle bus runs between the port and the Harimaya Bridge area in the city center. The ride takes about 25 minutes, and buses usually leave every 30 minutes or so. On many calls the shuttle is free, but this depends on your cruise line and the day. Please check the information from your ship before you get off. The shuttle drops you near Harimaya Bridge, which is the heart of Kochi city and the best starting point for exploring on your own.

One honest tip from a local: right after the ship opens, the line for the shuttle can be long. If your time in port is short, waiting 30 to 40 minutes for a bus seat is painful. Keep this in mind when you plan your day.

Taxis at the Port

Taxis usually wait at the terminal on cruise days, but the number is limited, and most drivers do not speak English. Taxis in Japan are safe and honest, and you never need to worry about being cheated. However, explaining a full day plan with several stops is difficult without Japanese. A taxi works fine for a simple one-way ride into the city. For a full day with multiple places, it becomes expensive and stressful.

Can You Walk or Take a Train?

The short answer is no. There is no train station or tram stop at Kochi New Port. The port area is industrial, and walking to the city center takes well over an hour along roads that are not made for walking. Please do not plan to walk. Take the shuttle, a taxi, or arrange a tour with pick up at the terminal.

Money: Cash Is Still King in Kochi

Japan uses cards more than before, but Kochi is a regional city, and many small shops, food stalls, and the famous Sunday Market still take cash only. My advice:

  • Bring some Japanese yen from the ship if you can.
  • The easiest ATMs for foreign cards are at 7-Eleven convenience stores and at Japan Post offices in the city center. Both have English menus.
  • Money exchange at the port itself is limited, so do not count on it.

Wi-Fi and Staying Connected

The cruise terminal usually has free Wi-Fi, and you will find free Wi-Fi at some spots in the city center. Between those places, coverage is thin. Download an offline map of Kochi before you leave the ship. If you are on a guided tour, this problem disappears, because your guide knows the way and can look things up for you.

What Is Near the Shuttle Drop-Off?

The shuttle brings you to the Harimaya Bridge area. From there you can reach the main city sights easily:

  • Harimaya Bridge: A small red bridge with a famous local love story. It is right there, so take a quick photo.
  • Kochi Castle: About 15 to 20 minutes on foot, or a short tram ride. One of only 12 original castles left in Japan.
  • Hirome Market: A lively food hall near the castle. This is the easiest place to try katsuo no tataki, the seared bonito that Kochi is famous for.
  • Sunday Market: If your ship arrives on a Sunday, this 300-year-old street market is a must. It starts near the castle.

What You Cannot Reach Easily From the Shuttle

This is where many cruise passengers get disappointed. The most beautiful places in Kochi are outside the city center, and public transport to them is weak:

  • Katsurahama Beach and the Sakamoto Ryoma statue: about 30 minutes by car from the city, but the bus is infrequent.
  • The Niyodo River and its famous “Niyodo Blue” water: about one hour by car, with almost no practical bus option for a day visitor.
  • Makino Botanical Garden on Mount Godai: reachable by a sightseeing bus, but the schedule eats your limited time.
