Crossing the Nagoya Low-Water Bridge

Before we reach the valley, we usually stop at the Nagoya low-water bridge, also called Nagoya Chinkabashi. This is a simple, flat bridge with no rails on the sides. It was built this way so that when the river rises after heavy rain, the water can pass over the top without breaking the bridge. Walking across it feels different from a normal bridge. You are very close to the water, and you can really feel the connection between the river and the people who live here.

It is a great photo spot too. The river usually looks calm and green here, with the mountains reflected on the surface. Many guests like to stop for a few minutes just to enjoy the quiet.

Walking Into Yasui Valley

From the bridge, we drive further upstream to Yasui Valley. This is where the color of the water starts to change from green to a bright, clear blue. A walking path follows the river, so you can enjoy the forest and the sound of the water as you go. The path has some uneven ground and a few steps, so comfortable walking shoes are a good idea.

The walk is not difficult, but it is not completely flat either. If you enjoy walking one or two hours a day, you will be totally comfortable here. We usually move at a relaxed pace, so there is plenty of time to stop, take photos, and just enjoy the fresh mountain air.

The Crystal Basin: Water Like Glass

The highlight of the valley is a spot called the Crystal Basin, or Suisho-buchi in Japanese. The name means “crystal pool,” and once you see it, you will understand why. The water here is so clear that you can see every stone on the bottom, even in the deep parts. On a sunny day, the pool shines in bright blue and green, almost like a swimming pool, but completely natural.

A little further up, there is also a small check dam, called a sabo dam in Japanese. It was built for flood control, but the still water behind it creates a mirror-like surface. On a calm day, it reflects the surrounding forest perfectly. Many guests say this is their favorite photo of the whole trip.

A quick tip: the color of the water can change a little depending on the weather. On a bright sunny day, the blue is stronger. After heavy rain, the water can look a bit cloudy for a day or two. Either way, it is still a beautiful and peaceful place to visit.
