Kochi City Walking Tour (Public Transport & Walking Only)
Photo Highlights

There’s a version of Kochi that you can only really see on foot — the rhythm of the covered arcade, the sound of the tram passing, the smell of katsuo no tataki from inside Hirome Market. This tour is built around that experience.
We use Kochi’s public trams and buses to move between spots, which is part of the experience in itself. The tram network in Kochi is one of the oldest still running in Japan, and riding it through the city center is a small pleasure that most visitors miss by taking taxis.
Along the way we cover the main landmarks — Kochi Castle, the samurai residence, Hirome Market, the Obiyamachi arcade — but at a pace that leaves room to actually stop, look around, and hear the stories behind what you’re seeing. I’ve been walking this city for years, and I still find things worth pointing out on every tour.
This is also the most affordable way to explore Kochi with a licensed guide. If you’d prefer door-to-door service in an air-conditioned minivan, my Kochi Highlights Tour with private vehicle is worth a look instead.
Itinerary (Approximate times provided as an example)
This itinerary can be customized to meet your needs and preferences. Send me a message with your requests!
We will meet at the central hub of Kochi City. Your guide will provide a brief orientation of the day’s adventure before we set off on foot.
Note for Cruise Ship Passengers: A shuttle bus usually operates between Kochi Port (Kochi Shin-ko) and the Harimaya Bridge area for most cruise arrivals. If a shuttle is not provided for your specific ship, please take a taxi (approx. 20 minutes) to the meeting point.
Dive into the energy of Kochi’s soul! Learn about the “Yosakoi” festival, a high-energy dance that started here and has spread worldwide. You can see the colorful costumes and even try playing the “Naruko” clappers.
Just a short walk from the terminal/Yosakoi museum, we’ll visit this famous red bridge. You’ll hear the poignant 19th-century forbidden love story associated with this landmark — a must-see photo spot for every visitor.
We’ll walk through this vibrant, 500-meter-long covered shopping street. It’s the perfect place to see modern local life, browse traditional shops, and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
A peaceful, well-preserved former residence of a samurai family from the Edo period. This site offers an intimate look at the traditional architecture and the daily lifestyle of the warrior class in old Kochi.
One of only 12 original wooden castles remaining in Japan. It is uniquely preserved, as both the main tower (Donjon) and the lord’s palace still exist today. The castle grounds offer a rare look at authentic Edo-period architecture and a panoramic view of the city.
Known as the “Kitchen of Kochi,” this bustling indoor market is packed with over 60 food stalls. It is the best place to witness the friendly local culture while tasting regional specialties like Katsuo no Tataki (seared bonito).

For a More Comfortable Experience
If you prefer to avoid long walks and waiting for public transport in the sun or rain, I highly recommend my “Kochi Highlights Tour with Private Vehicle Support.” That plan features a spacious Toyota Alphard with door-to-door service, allowing us to cover more sights (including Katsurahama Beach) efficiently and in air-conditioned comfort.
I currently offer several tour options, but I can also create a fully customized itinerary based on your interests. In the photo gallery, you’ll find examples of places and experiences I’ve introduced to past guests.
If there’s a specific place you’d like to visit, feel free to reach out.
For cruise ship travelers, most tours are around 6 hours, so I recommend choosing 3 to 4 spots. To make planning easier, I’ve grouped locations into Central, Eastern, and Western Kochi in the gallery — please use that as a reference.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do cruise ship passengers get to the meeting point?
Most cruise ships operating in Kochi provide a free shuttle bus between Kochi New Port (Kochi Shin-ko) and the Harimaya Bridge area in the city center. If a shuttle is not available for your ship, a taxi takes about 20 minutes and costs approximately 2,000–2,500 JPY. I’m happy to help you confirm the shuttle details when you book — just let me know which ship you’re arriving on.
What’s the difference between this tour and the Kochi Highlights Tour?
Both tours visit many of the same landmarks, but the experience is quite different. This Walking Tour uses public trams and buses, which means you get to ride Kochi’s historic tram network and move through the city the way locals do. It’s also the more affordable option and can accommodate up to 8 people. The Kochi Highlights Tour uses a private Toyota Alphard for door-to-door comfort, covers more ground in less time, and includes spots like Chikurinji Temple and Katsurahama Beach that are harder to reach on foot.
How much walking is involved?
This is a genuine walking tour — expect to walk 4–6 kilometers total over the course of the day, with some stairs at Kochi Castle and the samurai residence. We move at a comfortable pace with regular stops, but I’d recommend wearing sturdy, comfortable shoes rather than sandals or dress shoes. If walking isn’t suitable for your group, the Kochi Highlights Tour with private vehicle is a better fit.
What happens if it rains?
The tour runs rain or shine. Much of the route passes through covered areas — the Obiyamachi arcade, Hirome Market, and the interiors of the castle and samurai residence all provide shelter. I carry umbrellas for guests when needed. If severe weather is forecast, I’ll contact you in advance to discuss options.
Can children join this tour?
Yes, children are welcome. The pace is relaxed and the stops are varied enough to keep younger guests interested — especially Hirome Market and the tram rides. Please let me know the ages of your children when you contact me so I can plan accordingly.
Is this tour wheelchair accessible?
Unfortunately, the interiors of Kochi Castle and the Okawasuji Samurai Residence are not wheelchair accessible due to steep stairs. The outdoor grounds of the castle and other stops along the route are accessible. If accessibility is a concern, please contact me before booking so we can discuss the best options for your group.
Why is the capacity 8 people instead of 6?
Because this tour uses public transportation rather than a private vehicle, there’s no vehicle capacity limit. Up to 8 guests can join comfortably on trams and buses. For vehicle-based tours, the Toyota Alphard limits capacity to 6 guests.
How do I book this tour?
