Explore Niyodo Blue: Japan’s Most Beautiful River with Licensed Local Guide & Premium Minivan

I’ve lived in Kochi my whole life, and the Niyodo River still stops me in my tracks every time I visit. There’s a color the locals call “Niyodo Blue” — a shade of blue-green so vivid and clear that it doesn’t look real until you’re standing right in front of it. This tour is my way of sharing that moment with you.
We’ll follow the river upstream into Yasui Valley, one of the most beautiful stretches of the Niyodo, where the water pools into shades of emerald and turquoise depending on the light. Along the way, we’ll stop at a traditional low-water bridge that sits just inches above the river surface — a style of bridge unique to rural Kochi, built to let the river flow freely during floods rather than fighting against it.
This is a nature tour, but it’s also a window into how people in Kochi have lived alongside this river for generations. The Niyodo has been recognized repeatedly by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as one of the country’s cleanest rivers — and once you see the water, you’ll understand why that recognition is so well deserved.

Kochi New Port, Airport, Kochi Station, or Any Hotel in Kochi City
I offer a convenient door-to-door meet-up service using a luxury Toyota Alphard. Please inform me of your preferred meet-up location and time in advance. I will be there to welcome you and start our Kochi adventure in comfort.
The Nagoya Low-water Bridge, or Nagoya Chinka-bashi, is a traditional low-water bridge crossing the Niyodo River. Unlike modern bridges, it offers a close, almost intimate connection with the river, allowing visitors to truly feel the harmony between human life and nature in Kochi.
Yasui Valley is one of the most stunning spots along the Niyodo River in central Kochi. Famous for its deep emerald-blue waters, it is considered one of the best places to experience the beauty of “Niyodo Blue.”
Crystal Basin (Suishō-buchi): One of the most iconic spots in Yasui Valley. Its name comes from the clarity of the water — so pure that the riverbed looks like polished crystal. The pool reflects sunlight in brilliant shades of blue and emerald, looking like liquid glass.
Sabō Dam (Check Dam): A calm water surface that beautifully reflects the surrounding forest like a mirror. The contrast of man-made engineering with untouched natural beauty highlights the power and harmony of the landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Yasui Valley from Kochi city?
Yasui Valley is approximately 50 kilometers from central Kochi, about a 60–70 minute drive by car. The route takes you through the Niyodo River valley, and the scenery along the way is already beautiful. Having a private vehicle makes this destination much more accessible — public transportation to this area is very limited.
Is this tour suitable for cruise ship passengers?
Yes, and it’s one of the most unique shore excursions you can take from Kochi. The Niyodo River is not on most standard cruise itineraries, which makes this a genuinely off-the-beaten-path experience. I’ll pick you up at Kochi New Port and have you back well before your ship departs.
What is the best season to visit the Niyodo River?
The river is beautiful year-round, but late spring through early autumn (May to October) offers the most vibrant blue-green color, especially on sunny days when the light hits the water at the right angle. Summer is particularly stunning. In winter, the valley is quieter and the color shifts to a deeper, more mysterious blue — still worth the trip.
Can we swim in the river?
Swimming is possible at certain spots along the Niyodo River during summer, but designated swimming areas are limited. Please let me know in advance if swimming is something your group would like to do, and I’ll plan accordingly. Water shoes are recommended if you want to wade in.
What happens if it rains on the day of the tour?
The tour runs rain or shine. Light rain can actually make the river even more dramatic — the water level rises and the color intensifies. I carry umbrellas in the vehicle for guests to use. If heavy rain or flooding is forecast, I’ll contact you in advance to discuss options or rescheduling.
Is the walking difficult? Can elderly guests or children join?
The walking at Yasui Valley is mostly flat riverside paths, though some sections can be uneven or have small steps. It’s manageable for most guests, including older visitors, as long as they wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. Children are welcome — the river and the low-water bridge are especially exciting for kids. Please let me know your group’s needs and I’ll adjust the pace accordingly.
Is this a private tour?
Yes, completely private. It’s just you and your group — no strangers sharing the van or the guide. The price is per group (up to 6 people), which makes it great value for families or small groups.
How do I book this tour?
